No definite answer has been given to this question due to the various and contradictory views . Some affirm that the household of Imam Hnsayn did return to Karbela for piligrmage and others reject the idea of the household of Imam Husayn's travel to Karbela forty days after Imam's martyrdom. Of course each of these groups have their justifications. After his study of authentic texts of history and his review of various possible viewpoints, the author presents the views of the supporters of the first Arb' in piligrimage and gives his own opinion. He assumes that there is no sufficient and reliable evidence for the event of Arba'in and that he doubts the proposition of the arrival of Imam Husayn's householdat Kerbela for the Arba'in. Furthermore , he considers the account of returning Imam Husayn's head to Kerbela and burying it next to the body is a matter of dispute. Then , he refers to the narration of the Infallible which regards visiting Imam Husayn for the Arba'in among the signs of a true believer considering it a good representation of this highly recommended ritual and ite special reward it has. مسئله اربعین سید الشهداء(علیه السلام) و این که آیا خاندان آن حضرت پس از رهایى از اسارت یزید قصد عزیمت به کربلا را داشته و نیز آیا توانسته اند در آن روز به زیارت آن مضجع شریف نایل آیند و مرقد مطهرش را زیارت کنند، از جمله مسائلى است که از دیرباز صاحب نظران در باره آن اختلاف نظر داشته و هریک با استشهاد به ادله تاریخى براى اثبات یا نفى آن تلاش کرده اند. در این مقاله با توجه به متون تاریخى معتبر احتمالات ممکن را تبیین کرده و ضمن بیان نظر مدافعان این واقعه، دیدگاه خود را مبنى بر نبود دلیل کافى و قابل اعتماد بر مسئله اربعین سید الشهداء(علیه السلام)تبیین خواهیم نمود. هم چنین امکان رسیدن کاروان اسرا را نیز به کربلا در اربعین اول تقریبا ناممکن دانسته و در پایان، دلیل الحاق سر مطهر امام حسین(علیه السلام) را به جسم شریفش مورد خدشه قرار داده و وجود حدیث شریفى که زیارت اربعین را از علائم مؤمنان مى شمارد براى استحباب و فضیلت آن زیارت کافى دانسته ایم.
