The region of Tabaristan was especially important because of its geographical location and political situation and was always a shelter for chief opponents of the Caliphate. The characteristics of Tabaristan had made it a suitable place for Alavids to materialize their aspirations in a milieu out of the reach of the Caliphate. اين نوشتار بر آن است تا علل و چگونگى روى‏آوردن علويان به طبرستان تا تشكيل دولت علوى (250 ق) را بررسى كند. منطقه طبرستان به دليل موقعيت جغرافيايى و سياسى، اهميت ويژه‏اى داشت و همواره پناهگاه مخالفان رسمى دستگاه خلافت بود. ويژگى‏هاى منطقه طبرستان، آن را محل مناسبى براى علويان ساخته بود تا دور از دستگاه خلافت آرزوهاى خود را عملى سازند.
