The present article is a historical analysis of his opinion. Despite the advantages, such as separation of the dimensions of the problem, detailed discussion in the historical dimension and collecting the less well-known opinions from elders, this speech has important shortcomings in both method and content. These shortcomings, in terms of the method, include the unidirectional narration of history and unreliable trust on the opinions of elders, and in terms of content it includes, disregarding the motive of forgery and the process of disseminating of the attributed suggestions to Imam (as), incorrect translation of the important part of the cited report, neglecting the Yazid’s seeking allegiance, disregarding the foundations and purposes of the Imam's uprising and providing a vague image of it. آقای سروش محلاتی در گفتاری زیر عنوانِ «امکان یا امتناع مذاکره با دشمن در سیاست انقلابی امام حسین علیه السلام»، با استناد به گفت وگوی امام حسین علیه السلام و عمربن سعد در کربلا، تلاش کرده است تا ثابت کند: «امام حسین علیه السلام با انجام ملاقات هایی در کربلا، به دنبال مذاکره و توافق (با یزید) بود تا جلوی جنگ گرفته شود». نوشتار حاضر نقدی تاریخی بر دیدگاه اوست. گفتار وی با وجود امتیازاتی همچون تفکیک ابعاد مسئله، بحث تفصیلی در بُعد تاریخی و گردآوری آرای کم شناخته شده از بزرگان، دارای کاستی های مهمی در دو بخش روشی و محتوایی است. این کاستی ها از نظر روشی، نقل یک سویه‌ی تاریخ و تکیه‌ی ناروا بر آرای بزرگان، و از نظر محتوایی، بی توجهی به انگیزه‌ی جعل و روند اشاعه‌ی پیشنهادهای منتسَب به امام علیه السلام، ترجمه‌ی نادرست بخش مهمی از گزارش مورد استناد، نادیده انگاری بیعت خواهیِ یزید، و بی توجهی به مبانی و اهداف قیام امام علیه السلام و ارائه‌ی تصویری مبهم از آن است.
