Although his viewpoint is fairer and wiser than the other orientalists, he studied the character and the political and social behaviors of Amir al-Momenin Ali (P.B.U.H.) in the history from a non-religious viewpoint and through the Sunni and the other orientalists sources and methods, and has presented views, which are incompatible with the historical and religious foundations as well as the teachings of the Ahl al-Bayt (P.B.U.T.). Studying the political and administrative performance of Amir al-Momenin Ali (P.B.U.H.) during the historical events, as one of Madelung's notable interests, and relying on the Sunni sources, he believes that Imam Ali (P.B.U.H.) has had weak points in understanding the political issues and managing the political and social crises of Islamic society, because from his point of view, the sacred viewpoint towards the infallible Imams (P.B.U.T.) cannot be justified historically. Using a historical-theological approach and a descriptive-analytical method, and focusing on the Sunni and Shiite sources, while expressing the weakness of the author's research, this paper typified Madelung's historical views to answer the misconceptions and defend the political and social understanding and management of Imam Ali (P.B.U.H.) in solving the crisis. ویلفرد مادلونگ، خاورپژوه آلمانی، مسئله‌ی جانشینی پیامبر اکرم صلی الله علیه و آله و سلم را در کتاب «جانشینی محمد صلی الله علیه و آله و سلم» بررسی کرده است. دیدگاه وی نسبت به دیگر خاورپژوهان، اگرچه منصفانه و عالمانه است، اما با نگاهی برون دینی و با تکیه بر منابع و روش اهل سنت و دیگر مستشرقان، به بررسی ابعاد شخصیت و رفتارهای سیاسی و اجتماعی امیرمؤمنان علی علیه السلام در بستر تاریخی آن پرداخته و دیدگاه هایی ارائه کرده که با مبانی اعتقادی و گزاره های تاریخ تشیع و اهل بیت علیهم السلام سازگاری ندارد.     بررسی عملکرد مدیریتی ـ سیاسی حضرت علی علیه السلام در مواجهه با رویدادهای تاریخی، از محورهای قابل توجه مادلونگ بوده و در این باره، عمدتاً باتکیه بر منابع تاریخی عامه، بر این باور است که حضرت علی علیه السلام در فهم مسائل سیاسی و مدیریت بحران های سیاسی، اجتماعی جامعه‌ی اسلامی، دارای نقاط ضعفی بوده؛ زیرا از منظر وی، نگاه قدسی به معصومان علیهم السلام قابل توجیه تاریخی نیست. برای پاسخ به این گزاره های غلط، این پژوهش با رویکردی تاریخی ـ کلامی و به روش توصیفی ـ تحلیلی، دیدگاه های تاریخی مادلونگ را گونه شناسی کرده و با تکیه بر منابع فریقین، آنها را بررسی کرده و ضمن بیان ضعف تلاش های پژوهشی نویسنده، به دفاع از فهم و مدیریت سیاسی و اجتماعی حضرت علی علیه السلام در حل بحران های موجود پرداخته است. https://tarikh.nashriyat.ir/sites/tarikh.nashriyat.ir/files/article-files/6_14.pdf
