Kelberg called the emergence of the Twelver Shiites a "transfer from the Imamiyah," but Modarresi considered their emergence as "gradual development of the Shi'ism." Both regarded its history to be almost the same period of time, the middle of the fourth century AH, and in this regard they have cited the cases of reflection of the idea of "the twelve Imams" in ancient texts and have made some clear mistakes; they both have denied the recording of the Twelver beliefs in some texts which are not fully accessible to us, have neglected to record it in some sources and have had heterogeneous and sometimes contradictory views. In addition, Kleberg did not pay attention to the similarity of the word Imamiyya with the Twelver, and Modarressi had some "doubts" and false "generalizations", mistakes in "identifying the text and ancient versions of a narration" and "carelessness in understanding the terms of Mahdism". در این نوشتار، در بازخوانی و نقد دیدگاه های کلبرگ و مدرسی دربارۀ پیدایش تشیع دوازده امامی، بر پایۀ روشِ تاریخی ـ کلامی و با هدفِ مقایسۀ دیدگاه ها و بیان کاستی ها و اشتباهات کمترشناخته شدۀ این دو، موارد زیر دانسته شد: کلبرگ پیدایش تشیع دوازده امامی را «انتقال از امامیه»، و مدرسی «تکامل تدریجی مکتب تشیع» خوانده است. هر دو، تاریخ آن را تقریباً همسان، نیمه‌ی قرن چهارم هجری دانسته و در این باره به موارد انعکاس اندیشه‌ی «دوازده امام» در متون کهن استناد کرده و دچار اشتباهاتی بعضاً فاحش شده اند؛ چنان که هر دو، ثبت عقاید اثناعشری را در برخی متون که کامل به ما نرسیده اند، انکار نموده و از ثبت آن در برخی منابع غفلت کرده و دیدگاه هایی ناهمگون و گاه متناقض داشته اند. افزون بر این، کلبرگ به هم پایگیِ واژه‌ی امامیه با اثناعشریه توجه نداشته و مدرسی نیز دچار «تردیدها» و «تعمیم ها»ی ناروا، اشتباه در «شناسایی متن و نسخه های کهن یک روایت» و «بی دقتی در فهم اصطلاحات مهدویت» شده است. https://tarikh.nashriyat.ir/sites/tarikh.nashriyat.ir/files/article-files/6_18.pdf
