Abstract:
The expansion of modern medicine was accompanied by many challenges in the Qajar period. Many factors played a role during this era that prevented or caused it. One of the things that has been less discussed has been the role of religious scholars. This article examines this issue and tries to answer the question of what was the encounter of religious scholars with modern medicine and what were its consequences? The conducted investigations show that these objections existed, but there are some reasons for them that can be explained. Therefore, this article, by examining the documents and reports of that time, came to the conclusion that the opposition of the scholars to the achievements of modern medicine was not general, but it was in the aspect of modern medicine that had opposition to Islamic jurisprudence and Sharia. These objections, which were generally at the beginning of the development of modern medicine in the Qajar period, played an effective role in the opposition of religious people and people of Sharia to modern medicine, which had significant consequences in opposition to modern medicine and its achievements.
