Drawing on Max Weber’s theory of political legitimacy, this article examines the role of Aisha as one of the leaders of the rebels in the Battle of the Camel (36 AH / 656 CE) and the impact of her social and religious standing on the position of the people of Basra. According to Weber’s theory, political legitimacy derives from three main sources: traditional, charismatic, and legal-rational. In this battle, Aisha, through a combination of traditional legitimacy (as the widow of the Prophet of Islam and the daughter of Abu Bakr, the first caliph) and charismatic legitimacy (her rhetorical influence and ability to mobilize people through religious emotion), was able to persuade a significant segment of Basra’s population to support the anti ‘Ali movement. On the one hand, her status as “Mother of the Believers” bestowed upon her a divinely sanctioned legitimacy that convinced many Basrans that her presence in the battle was not only not a violation of God’s concealment, but also a religious duty in seeking vengeance for Uthman. On the other hand, her fiery speeches in arousing tribal and religious sentiments were an expression of charismatic legitimacy that even drew groups from rival tribes into alliance with the rebels. However, the tension between Aisha’s traditional legitimacy and the tribal attitudes of some Basrans (such as Abu Bakra al-Thaqafi’s withdrawal on the grounds of female leadership) shows that legitimacy in Arab society of that period was always situated in a complex interaction with gender norms and tribal structures. This analysis shows that the rebels’ initial success in gaining Basran support was less the result of legal-rational legitimacy than the product of a shrewd exploitation of traditional and charismatic sources of legitimacy; although this legitimacy was ultimately weakened by internal contradictions (such as the breach of female seclusion) and by the resistance of Ali’s supporters, who regarded their own legitimacy as grounded in public allegiance.
